After people noticed that PS Plus gift cards were being delisted, Sony has suddenly released new ones – and they’re very confusing.

Ahead of Sony officially announcing its revamped PlayStation Plus service, people already knew it was coming when they began discontinuing gift cards for PlayStation Now, with rumours already suggesting that it would be merged with the new PS Plus.

That’s exactly what happened, and now the revamped service is live everywhere in the world Sony has stopped selling PS Plus gift cards – although they’ve not confirmed as much officially.

Like everything else involving the service, Sony has made little to no effort to explain its intentions and it’s fallen to everybody else to learn that the gift cards aren’t being discontinued but have seen a revamp to match the service.

From what we can tell so far, there are now three types of PlayStation gift cards: regular ones that presumably can only be spent on digital downloads and DLC, PS Plus specific ones for certain subscriptions, and hybrid ones that can be put towards a subscription or used as store credit.

For whatever reason, the PS Plus specific cards don’t mention what tier they’re for. Instead, their prices just match the subscriptions. So, one for £84 is no doubt meant for a 12-month subscription to PS Plus Extra, which costs £83.99.

This is a lot more confusing than how they were originally, since they explicitly stated how many months of a subscription you were paying for.

Both ShopTo and Amazon have cards in stock. While the official PlayStation website does advertise its gift cards as available at online retailers – it just doesn’t say which or provide any links.

Word of Sony removing PS Plus gift cards from retailers began last week when Polish site XGP said that they were no longer available at Polish retailers, as well as other stores worldwide in the likes of Germany and Canada.

Shortly after, VGC noticed that Amazon, Game, Smyths, and Argos weren’t selling them either. At the time of writing, this looks to still be the case for GAME and Argos, which lack PS Plus specific gift cards. Amazon and Smyths have received them, though.
