Some of the best women’s water polo teams in the nation will converge on Berkeley this weekend for the annual Cal Cup at Spieker Aquatics Complex and Legends Aquatic Center. All six teams participating in the tournament are ranked in the top-15 nationally, with four in the top-10 – No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Cal, No. 9 Fresno State, No. 11 UC Davis and No. 14 San Jose State. The Bears are coming off an impressive season-opening performance at last weekend’s Bulldog Fest in Fresno, where Cal went 3-0 – all against top-10 opponents. Senior Shea Salvino scored seven goals during the tournament and was named the MPSF Player of the Week.

BEAR NECESSITIES

STRONG START
Cal’s 2023 season got off to a promising start last weekend when the Bears defeated three top-10 opponents at the Bulldog Fest in Fresno. Cal opened the season by defeating No. 5 UC Irvine 15-10 then followed up with a 13-10 victory over No. 7 Michigan and a 16-10 triumph over No. 8 Fresno State. Seniors Shea Salvino and Cecily Turner and sophomore Rozanne Voorvelt each scored seven goals during the weekend, with Salvino being recognized as the MPSF Player of the Week for her efforts. The Bears had 14 different players score goals during the tournament, including the first career goals for freshmen Millie Quin, Janna Tauscher and Abbi Magee.

SALVINO NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Shea Salvino was named MPSF Player of the Week on Tuesday after helping the Bears record three wins over top-10 opponents at the Bulldog Fest in Fresno. Salvino scored seven goals during the tournament, highlighted by registering three goals and an assist in a victory over No. 7 Michigan. She also notched two goals apiece in wins over No. 5 UC Irvine and No. 8 Fresno State.

INCREDIBLE ISABEL
After becoming just the second Cal goalie ever to be named a First Team All-American last year, Isabel Williams got the 2023 season off to a strong start with 31 saves over three games. In the process, Williams moved into a tie for eighth place on the Bears’ all-time saves list with 324 in her career. Williams led the MPSF with 10.7 saves per game last season and amassed 245 saves overall – the fourth-highest single-season mark in program history. After the season, Williams also spent time training with the U.S. National Team.

UP-AND-COMERS
The Bears were one of only two teams to place two players on the MPSF All-Newcomer last season when Rozanne Voorvelt and Jessie Rose both earned the honor. Voorvelt put up significant numbers during her freshman season, accumulating 14 goals, 17 assists and 16 field blocks. Rose broke into the Bears’ starting lineup at the outset of the season and had one of the more memorable Cal goals in recent history when she converted in sudden victory overtime to lift the Bears to a victory over Stanford. Voorvelt picked up where she left off last weekend with seven goals at the Bulldog Fest, including four in a win over No. 7 Michigan.
