Memorial Day weekend sales to shop – Times Union

Planning to hit the beach or barbecue this weekend? You may want to set aside some time to shop, too.

With everything from gas, groceries and clothing to computers, travel and utilities costing more, shopping sales is critical if you’re looking to score solid deals and save cash any way you can.

Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor those members of our military who we lost. It also marks the unofficial start to summer and the year’s first major shopping event. That means retailers looking to boost sales are queuing up a deluge of deals.

Many merchants received a major boost to their bottom during last year’s stimulus surge. Since then, sales have softened at some major retailers, including Target and Walmart, who recently reported lower than expected earnings as consumers contend with rampant inflation and weakening discretionary spending.

There could be a silver lining for savvy shoppers. Because many consumers are shopping for essentials, inventory levels in certain categories are up. In mid-May, Target’s CEO admitted that the company misread consumer sentiment which led them to “carry too much inventory, particularly in bulky categories, including kitchen appliances, TVs and outdoor furniture.”

What does that mean for consumers looking to splurge on non-essentials, even if just a little? Tempting sales as some retailers continue to clear out excess inventory.

Get ready to shop and save, said Kristin McGrath, shopping expert and editor of’s blog, “The Real Deal.” The best savings will be on big ticket items.

“This year’s deals follow the pattern we’ve seen with past Memorial Day offerings — big deals on major kitchen appliances (now’s the time to upgrade your refrigerator!), mattresses, bedding, spring apparel, cookware and more,” she said.
