A Wilkesboro man reported to the Wilkes Sheriff’s Office on May 23 that he was the victim of a scam.
The man reported opening an email identified as being from PayPal that stated, “Thank you for your payment,” said Major Logan Kerr of the sheriff’s office.
Kerr said that the victim called the number listed for “Customer Service” and was told he was being “refunded” an excessive amount of money and was instructed to return the amount beyond what he was owed in Apple gift cards.
Kerr said the victim complied with this, but he never received any “refund” and determined he hadn’t bought anything through Paypal. He said the man was scammed out of the Apple gift cards.
