KINGSTON, N.Y. — A gun amnesty and buyout event takes place in Midtown on Saturday, April 30.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Andy Murphy Midtown Neighborhood Center, 467 Broadway.
The buyout is sponsored by city police and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with New York State Attorney General Letitia James. It will offer pre-paid gift cards on-site for unloaded weapons.
Also offered at the event will be free gun safes, offered to individuals who must display a valid pistol permit. The safes are limited to one per household and will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis.
Anyone who relinquishes an assault rifle will receive a $300 pre-paid gift card; handgun owners will receive a $150 Walmart gift card for 9mm or larger guns in good, working condition. Rifles and shotguns in good conditions will earn a $75 gift card and the owners of non-working, replica and antique weapons will receive a $25 gift card.
Weapons must be unloaded when they arrive at the drop-off site. They should be in a plastic bag, paper bag or a box. The number of guns that can be relinquished is unlimited but active or retired law enforcement officers are not eligible to participate.
