However, discounter Lidl has hit on a novel approach. It is going to pay members of the public a finder’s fee if they successfully identify sites for new stores.

The fee is either 1.5% of the total freehold purchase price or 10% of the first year’s rent for leaseholds, which would equate to £22,500 for a completed £1.5m site purchase.

If you’re keen to capitalise on the discounter’s largesse, Lidl is looking for freehold, leasehold or long-leasehold opportunities.

It wants sites of more than 1.5 acres for standalone stores or up to four acres for mixed-use schemes and it is looking for town-centre or edge-of-town-centre locations in addition to retail parks.

To paraphrase the discounter’s company slogan: ‘Big on quality, Lidl on price – generous finder’s fees paid.’
